Where's his Blairfare? How our millionaire former prime minister got a free train ride after boarding without cash or cards

Since leaving Number Ten, Tony Blair has earned £500,000 on the speaking circuit as well as racking up consultancy positions worth millions of pounds.

So you would expect him to have enough money for a £24.50 train fare.

Yet when a ticket inspector asked him to pay up on the Heathrow Express the former prime minister was forced to admit he had no cash or cards.

Astonishingly, however, the first class fare was waived and Mr Blair had the 15-minute journey for free.

His embarrassment came on Monday on his way to catch a plane to make a speech in the U.S.

He apparently discovered that the money an aide had given him the night before was no longer in his pocket.

According to Mr Blair's spokesman, a member of his security team offered to pay for him before the inspector insisted it was not necessary.

Passengers can buy Heathrow Express tickets in advance or on the train.

Travellers using the service yesterday said they were outraged that Mr Blair had been given a free ride.

Sarah Tucker, 33, who was returning from a trip to the U.S., said: "He should be treated the same as everyone else.

"It cost me £15.50 for a regular single fare and it only took 15 minutes.

"If he offered to pay then they really should have taken the money."

Another woman traveller said: "I'm surprised he didn't get a taxi like all the other rich people.

"It doesn't seem fair and I think he should be sent the bill."

Mr Blair's spokesman said the former premier was not at fault for the unpaid fare.

"Payment was offered and was refused," he added.

"The ticket inspector said, "No, don't worry about it". He would have been happy to pay and in fact still is happy to pay."

The spokesman was not however able to resolve whether Mr Blair, like the Queen, carries no cash.

Bosses at Heathrow Express were unclear about how Monday's incident unfolded.

At first a spokesman said Mr Blair had taken the 9.40am train and that an aide had purchased a ticket for him on board.

"Mr Blair is a valued customer and we welcome all former prime ministers on Heathrow Express.

"Unfortunately, we don't offer them special discounts," he said.

Confronted with evidence that no ticket had in fact been bought, the spokesman said attempts were being made to contact the inspector for his version of events.

The spokesman added: "Our policy is that everyone pays regardless of who they are.

"If it turns out that payment was not taken we will investigate."

As well as being a Middle East envoy, Mr Blair has landed advisory roles with finance giants JP Morgan and Zurich, which earn him more than £2million a year.

He opened the Heathrow Express service with John Prescott in 1998.

Costing £550million to build, the 17-mile route was designed to lure airline passengers away from the M4 and the Piccadilly Line.
